100 Rumours — and What's Actually True

Half of this is true.

A rumour is the cheapest adventure hook there is: the town writes it, the players hear it, and nobody can sue you for it. This is a book of one hundred of them — the things being said in taprooms, markets, watch-houses, temples, courts and villages — with the one thing the GM actually needs: what’s really going on, and what happens when the party pulls the thread.

Every rumour carries a verdict:

• True: it’s exactly what it sounds like; the fun is in the details.
• False: someone started it, and someone always has a reason. A false rumour is really a rumour about its author.
• Worse: the word on the street is accurate as far as it goes. It doesn’t go nearly far enough.

Each entry gives you the rumour in the speaker’s own words, the truth with its verdict, and the thread: the scene, complication or session that starts when your players decide to find out. Re-verdict anything: every True here plays as False at your table and vice versa.
